Ontario Soccer Update: Cancellation of Ontario Cup 2020
July 6, 2020

Ontario Soccer, in consultation with Canada Soccer and the Government of Ontario, continues to monitor the most recent developments surrounding the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, the resulting public health crisis and now the province’s Return to Play.

On June 23, Canada Soccer announced the cancellation of the 2020 edition of the Toyota National Championships.

In light of the ongoing impact of COVID-19 pandemic, Ontario Soccer has made the difficult decision today to cancel the 2020 edition of the Ontario Cup as well as the 2020 edition of the Masters Provincial Championships 2020.

The Ontario Cup competition dates back to 1901 and is one of Canada’s oldest sport tournaments played.

Ontario Soccer took into account the regional and provincial realities of the requirements to host the competitions, as well as the challenges of completing competitions due to the restriction of matches. The safety and health of our participants was considered first and foremost in our decision.

At the present time, Ontario Soccer is in “Phase 1” – Return to Training” of a three-phase return to play plan. The Ontario Cup and Masters Provincial Championship competitions are categorized as being in “Phase 3 – Return to Soccer”. The latest possible date to run an abbreviated form of the Ontario Cup was August 7.

The Ontario (Outdoor) Cup and Masters Provincial Championship competitions will return in 2021.

Organizations, which registered for the Ontario Cup and Masters Provincial Championships, will now receive a full refund and will receive further instructions from Ontario Soccer on how a refund will be applied.
